On Wednesday the Winnipeg Jets traded injured left winger Evander Kane to the rebuilding Buffalo Sabres in a seven-player deal. The Jets receive defenseman Tyler Myers, forwards Drew Stafford and Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux and Buffalo’s first-round pick in 2015 for Kane, defenseman Zach Bogosian and college goaltender Jason Kasdorf.

Over the last few years, there have been rumors about the Jets being unhappy with the production from Kane and his overall development. Speculation has continued to arise as to whether or not the Jets would pull the trigger and move Kane, and what they would get in return. With the team in their first playoff race since moving to Winnipeg from Atlanta in 2011, the Jets decided that the time to deal Evander Kane was now. Kane made his feeling towards the team he had spent his entire career with upon his exit:

“It’s nice to go somewhere where you feel wanted and you feel that they want to put you in a situation to have success.”

On the season, Kane had 10 goals and 12 assists in 37 games played. The trade is also coming amidst allegations that other players on the Jets roster we’re bullying Kane, who missed the game in Vancouver on February fifth. On February sixth, Kane decided to have season ending surgery on his shoulder. Overall, the trade is a good one for both teams. The Sabres (who also added goaltender Anders Lindback and a conditional third-round pick from the Dallas Stars for goalie Jhonas Enroth on Wednesday) acquire a player who will help them in their rebuilding process, as they feel they are almost ready to compete in the next year or so after what has been a three-year process. The Jets sit fourth in their division and sixth in their conference, will be acquiring two proven players in Myers and Stafford who give them experience and versatility to their roster, and two solid prospects (both of whom were first round picks), in Brendan Lemieux and Joel Armia, as well as a first round pick in what should be a quality draft-class (which didn’t hurt the Sabres too badly since they had three first rounders to spare.).

My final grades:

Buffalo: B+

Winnipeg: A+
